Exotic, brown, curly, and me. Of all the things to come out of the natural hair movement this work captures the chic and effortless side of natural beauty. Its not often natural hair is portrayed as being unanimously beautiful. “I realized there were no real quality portraits of women with natural hair. I was looking to do something different and thought I could have something really special with this project”, said Nunez.
I first learned of The Coiffure Project , by up and coming Baltimore photographer Glenford Nunez, from Harlem Loves blog. Nunez started the project when he realized the snapshots he took of his assistant, who is natural, were becoming a work of its own.
“The Coiffure Project started out as simple cell phone photos of my assistant Courtney who wears her hair natural. I noticed that I was accumulating a small body of work. I thought to myself ‘I may have a good thing going’ so I decided make a effort to create a book of natural hair portraits,” said Nunez.
Nunez would hopefully like to turn his work into a coffee table book. If you would like to be a part of “The Coiffure Project” please email cd@typBaltimore.com with recent photos.
